The Apprentice: Donald Trump, Week 5: Zathura, Sony Pictures, and Wyclef Jean

Original Air Date: 10/20/05

By Heidi Putallaz

Marshawn Evans sets the stage perfectly for the start of the fifth week in the 13-week job interview when she says, “I am really tired of being around bickering women, honestly— and when we lose, we are even more divisive.  Our fifth task tomorrow will tell if we really are as strong as we think we are.” Don’t worry Marshawn, you’ll have your needed boost of testosterone around you soon enough.  When Donald Trump meets the teams at Grand Army Plaza, he “surprises” them by giving Capital Edge the chance to steal away someone from Excel.  A mere nanosecond later, the girls unanimously decide they gotta have everyone’s favorite pretty boy, Randal PinkettFelisha Mason says that he will be an asset to their team—or is it that she just like his assets?  Judging by the smile on Randal’s face, he has no problem joining them to find out.

For this week’s task, the teams must design a parade float for Sony’s upcoming movie Zathura—or in case you have trouble saying that, maybe you can say Jumanji redux.  The winning float will be the one that best represents, promotes, advertises and incorporates the spirit of the movie—blah, blah, blah—as judged by the director, Jon Favreau, and some studio suit whose name I forget and honestly don’t care about.

Brian Mandelbaum decides it’s high time for him to step up and become PM for Excel to show Trump what he can do.  His team’s meeting with the judges gets off to a really great start when he botches the name of the film.  Granted “Zathura” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but like my seventh-grade English teacher once said, “If you say it twice, you own the word.”  Favreau makes it explicitly clear that he wants to see “Zathura” displayed prominently on the float in order to familiarize moviegoers with the name.

Up for PM on Capital Edge is none other than Jennifer Rogers—oops, I mean Jennifer Murphy; don’t you just hate how happy she is all the time?!  When the team meets with Favreau and the studio suit, it’s all Jen.  She acts as if she were back on the pageant circuit.  She’s all prissy and doesn’t allow anyone else to speak. Looks like someone learned something from Toral Mehta!  But the director rises to the occasion and is sure to get the last word in, warning them that the title of the movie is paramount, “If you don’t know the name of the movie, you can’t go see it.” Hmm…seems we got a theme going here.

On Excel, tensions rise when Clay Lee points out that Marcus Garrison isn’t pulling his weight. C’mon, guys—he’s vying for the camera; why do you think they picked him for the show?  He didn’t even finish college, which I know isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but he’s definitely missing some much needed business savvy.  I can’t believe Trump handpicked this guy. In any case, the tension escalates even more when Brian decides to send Markus on a food run.  Markus gets all defensive and tells us he’s the “Teflon player; this team will never be able to set me up.” Famous last words, considering his hair looks better than Trump’s and I doubt Trump cares to be out-Trumped.

Things on Capital Edge don’t look much better. Jen’s grand idea is to have the float transition from a normal house to one flying through space. Kristi Caudell has a different take on it though and gets up in her face, becoming all bossy and whiney at the same time. While the hens fight it out, Randal just sits there with a great big ole grin on his face for what he describes as “a total lack of respect amongst certain members of the team.”  It gets so bad that Jen pulls Kristi aside to tell her to cut the crap—or as she puts it, her “negative attitude.”  Now I’m not sure if I’d say she’s got an attitude problem, but if she does, maybe it’s because Jen talks to her like a 2 year old, “You need to listen before you speak.” Well Jen, are you listening to her ideas?
