The Apprentice: Donald Trump, Week 4: Dairy Queen's Blizzard and the Mets

Original Air Date: 9/27/05

By Heidi Putallaz

The suite door opens and Capital Edge peers around every corner, placing last minute bets on whether or not Rebecca Jarvis will be fired for aligning herself with Toral Mehta’s rapidly sinking ship. As Felisha Mason says, “Rebecca’s decision to not bring Toral back into the boardroom—that is not loyalty; that is stupidity—and she is gonna go home for it.”  Don’t suppress your feelings Felisha, you’ll get an ulcer.  Needless to say, she’s pretty miffed when she sees Rebecca come in and realizes it was Jennifer Wallen who was sent packing.  Wanting to lick the team’s wounds, Rebecca tells them, “It’s good to be back, and we all obviously have a lot to talk about before our next task.”

And talk they do, the whole team dying to know what Rebecca sees in Toral, all the while Toral is sitting right there beside them, stone-faced and quiet.  Rebecca again springs to her defense and even goes so far as to guarantee that Toral will step up on the next task. Guarantee?!  There are no guarantees on The Apprentice.  Doesn’t any of them watch this show?  My advice: never put your faith in someone without first truly knowing where she stands.  I mean, good Lord, Toral actually admitted she hasn’t given 100% of herself to the tasks.  She obviously has no interest in actually becoming the next Apprentice.

Donald Trump meets with execs from Dairy Queen’s marketing division in front of Trump Tower’s own ice cream parlor.  I know, I know—it’s the first place I think of grabbing an ice cream cone in NYC too!  Glad to know more than money is melting away down there.  After joking with the execs that they could open up shop there too if they will cough up the hefty rent (probably in cookie dough chunks, judging by Trump’s waist line), Trump meets with the teams and tells them that Diary Queen is the biggest ice cream distributor in the US.  What?! The nearest Dairy Queen around here is 75 miles outside LA—and the only reason I know of that one is because I went to school there.  For crying out loud, Dairy Queen must be as big as crawfish east of the Mississippi to beat out Ben & Jerry’s.

After the execs get to say their names on TV (their moms must be so proud), Trump tells the teams that their task this week is to design a brand mascot for DQ’s Blizzard.  The character that most represents the DQ brand and appeals to the target teen demographic, as judged by the DQ execs, shall win. Before dismissing the teams, Trump goes out of his way to warn Toral that he is expecting more from her.

Clay Lee positively jumps at the chance to be PM for Excel, under one condition: do what I say, and don’t whine if you’re hungry!  There’s a boss I would want to give my all for!  Quickly turning into an Apprentice for the Ayatollah, Clay yells at Markus Garrison for not getting an appointment with the DQ honchos within half an hour to discuss what they are looking for.  It’s not like DQ has a business to run or anything.  Like James Dillon says, it’s “Clay’s way or the highway.”

Over at Capital Edge, everybody waits for Toral to step up and become PM as Rebecca “guaranteed” she would.  But Toral’s faith isn’t in it again. She says, with the greatest hesitation: if no one else wants to take it on, she would do it—if, she stresses again, no one else wants to.  With one foot in and one foot out, her teammates are all waiting for her to “shake it all about,” but Toral just bides her time, staring right past all her non-Wharton, and therefore just plain inferior, teammates.  Not willing to take it anymore, Felisha speaks up, and a grateful team instantly makes her PM.  Poor Rebecca.  She realizes her mistake in backing Toral and now has a huge target on her back come elimination time.
