The Apprentice: Donald Trump, Week 3: Best Buy, Electronics, and Old Folks!

Original Air Date: 10/6/05

By Heidi Putallaz

A saxophone turns out the blues as Chris Valletta does a little song-and-dance for us in his cab and the whole Excel team shows their dismay upon Markus Garrison’s return to the suite.  The score then picks up beat as his teammates fake their happiness at seeing him. As Markus says, “What is done is done; it’s over.  Today is day one.”

While the men all pretend to be buddies, Toral Mehta and Rebecca Jarvis are clearly becoming real buddies after bonding all day in the clinic, where Rebecca finds out that she broke her ankle after her embarrassing fall on the ice last week.  While her teammates wonder if she’ll be able to continue, Rebecca declares, “I never go down that easy.”  Hmmm, I bet someone’s planning to milk her injury for all its worth.

Gathering the troops in front of Trump Place, Donald Trump boasts that the spot where they are standing will eventually become one of the country’s greatest parks.  Yep, Mr. Trump, all the three-eyed fish swimming in the Hudson River, which we will get to see during our morning jog under that lovely thruway pass, will second that.

When he’s finished basking in the glory of his own ideas, Trump unveils the task for week 3.  The teams are to go to Best Buy (again!) and pick out electronic products that they will have to show senior citizens how to use.  Oops, I mean retirees—I guess I need to bone up on my politically correct terms again.  Oh—screw it! The team that teaches the old people—yes, when you’re over seventy, you’re just plain old, no two ways about it, and I don’t care if George Ross likes it or not—new tricks, based upon exit surveys, will win the task.  As Trump says, “Business isn’t just about making money; it’s also about giving back…”  Since the rest of that golden bit of advice must be on the editing room floor, I will be so kind as to finish it for you: “…It’s also about giving back so that the mayor will look the other way and grant you whatever permits and licenses you need.  Make the mayor look good, and he’ll see to it that construction goes smoothly.”

Randal Pinkett keeps on playing the dead grandma card, claiming how much he loved showing her a picture of herself on the computer…as he swoops in and names himself project manager.  Like anyone is gonna touch that emotional landfill, even in a hazmat suit. With his dead grannie as their beacon to success, the first thing the Excel team does is to discuss ideas of what technology they want to demonstrate.  Markus suggests Tivo.  Not a bad idea, really—what with all the dentures flying over whether to watch Oprah or Maury, and don’t even dare bring up, Montel.

No matter, Clay Lee quickly shoots it down, saying that Tivo is too hard to set up (as in, I couldn’t do it, so how can they?).  He then asks George if he feels those in “his age range and maturity range” would be interested in Tivo. Ouch, I know what I said before, but I would have got smacked upside the head if I ever disrespected an elder to his face like that.  Somebody get him a mocha soy latte stat; this boy needs to wake up and remember he is interviewing for a job and is supposed to be telling the boss how he would do it, not asking him.  George is stunned.  All he can say is, “That’s something you need to figure out.”
