The Apprentice, Week 16:
NYC 2012 Athlete Challenge and Best Buy Video Game World Championship
Original Air Date: 5/12/05
Donald Trump makes his way to Chelsea Piers, where Tana is now grinning maniacally, hiding the fact that her soul has been broken into a thousand pieces. She fawns over the celebrity athletes, including Bruce Jenner, Michael Phelps and Nadia Comaneci, and brags about being in the presence of such greatness. I think this is where Tana is failing. She’s trying so hard to fit in with the VIP’s that she’s failing to notice everything else falling apart around her.
Tana leads Governor Pataki towards his spot, offering up as little info as possible. “I don’t need to prep you,” she explains to him, even though he’s asking, “Now what do I do? Where do I go?” Now, oye, the American flag that he wants to carry is missing. There is one hanging down from the ceiling, but every other flag in the world is being waved in the procession. Tana pretends to act all blasé in front of Carolyn Kepcher, “If it can’t come, show’s gotta go on.” Which, I mean—she’s actually right. I understand that it’s important and all for the Olympics but…it’s a flag. Not like a gymnast breaking his leg in mid-leap or something. It's just a flag. No matter, Pataki totally sells out Tana by squealing to Trump. Trump, who otherwise wouldn’t even have noticed this oversight, now pretends that he noticed it all along and that it’s a wicked big deal. “To me, that was a big mistake.”
Cut to Chris figuring out with the runners how much time they need to warm up. After it’s announced, Tana butts in, “Are we taking a break here? Don’t tell me it was Chris.” The dude says, yes, he did just speak with Chris. “Oh yeah, no, that wasn’t supposed to be.” Carolyn looks absolutely horrified that Tana is admitting a clear lack of communication with her team in front of all these important people. “If I asked Tana how things were going and if I brought up any errors, without a doubt she would blame her team. Which clearly was not professional,” Carolyn says.

In yet another death knoll for Tana, Chris informs her about something or another that needs to get done. She ignores him, grinning and nodding, “I know, I know,” while looking at her clipboard. He walks away, and she tries to confide in a dude, “Hey, he’s trying to tell the boss how to do the job.” Oooh, ow, she just lost me there. The whole “I’m the boss” attitude is going to wear thin very quickly. It gets worse when she scrunches up her face and threatens, “Jiminy, I’m going to punch somebody.” The guy’s face just falls, and he looks terribly uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, the 2012 people are complaining to each other about everything that’s going wrong. Athletes are walking around looking lost, while Tana gloats to Governor Pataki, “I think you’re looking at the next Apprentice. This went so well.” The problem here, once again, is not that Tana did such a bad job but that she wants so badly to be on their level, while the truth is they’re just being indulgent. It’s all a bit hard to watch. To us, she boasts, “This couldn’t haven’t have gone any better. I’ve got this job.” Yes, yes, I know that I’m completely being manipulated by the editors.
Over at the video game tournament, George Ross challenges Carolyn to a fight, inciting her to get into a mock boxing stance, thereby making them the most adorable reality show duo ever. The event looks all swanky, and Kendra sidles up to the rapper Fabolous and murmurs, “Well, aren’t you fabulous?” Because I’m sure a guy named Fabolous has never heard that before. No matter that I’ve never heard of him, because that’s neither here nor there.
