Week 8: "A Tale of Two Leaders"
Deutsch, Hummers, and
New York’s Finest
Word has it that Jennifer Massey is starring in Catwoman 2: Revenge of the Backstabbing Blondes. Meow.
Nope, my mistake. They had to scrap the sequel. Jennifer couldn’t even wait for Elizabeth to turn her back before stabbing her.
Raj: “I think I will come under fire for taking militaristic lines.” Would it kill him to say something normal for once, like “I think I screwed up with all the Army crap.”?
Raj rests his case for his military campaign on the fact that everyone except for Elizabeth agreed it was a good idea. I’ll bet a lot of people agreed that Cop Rock, New Coke, and Ricky Martin were good ideas, but that doesn’t make any of them good.
Elizabeth digs her grave: “A leader stands by her convictions.” Uh, Liz? You changed your mind more often than J. Lo changes husbands.
Jennifer: “Elizabeth is indecisive to the point of paralysis.” And if she wasn’t, Jennifer would make sure to hammer away at her until she was.
Trump, after post-production dubbing: “Wow. Based on that, I feel I live in a police state. Forget about shooting The Apprentice. I ought to go upstairs and lock my door.” Trump, before dubbing: “Wow. That sucked.”
Trump to Elizabeth: “You don’t have a lot of something.” Money, testicles, friends on the team, pet llamas, time left on the show…Yep, it’s hard to pin down.
Carolyn fights off a smirk as Trump fires Elizabeth without even giving her the chance to defend
herself. Carolyn probably smirked when Bambi’s mother died too.

Who was fired? Elizabeth.
Who should have been fired? Everybody on Apex except Elizabeth.
Why? Say what you want about her ineffective leadership (and it’s all true), but with every last one of her teammates completely opposed to her point of view, she had little choice but to placate them. There was no way that team would have followed her on a softer ad campaign, despite the fact that’s what Donnie Deutsch explicitly said he wanted. If I had to pick only one person to go, it would have to be Raj, for his stubborn forcefulness and absolute unwillingness to entertain any alternatives. Elizabeth wasn’t any good, but nobody could have led this team.
