Dawna devises the smart strategy of finding kids off the street to form a test focus group to hear their adaptation. This gal will be a contender down the line. Back on Matchstick, Jeff quickly shows his true colors when his teammates criticize his story idea and he yells at them to shut up. The bad blood spills over into the next day when Jeff gets into a spat with Dawn and decides to replace her and have Shawn read the story to the kids instead. Jeff explains he “did not need her to be likeable to the audience.” We all know what marketing school he went to–DDU: Dumb and Dumber University.
Story time. The kids laugh and clap when the Primarius book’s Jack climbs down the beanstalk into the ocean to find some underwater treasure. When it’s Matchstick’s turn though, their smiles turn into confused frowns. Who made Hansel and Gretel harder to understand than AP calculus? No surprise, Primarius wins the task. Their reward is a sushi dinner with Martha. Sushi?! Martha, Martha, Martha if I ever come to your house for dinner, you had better be laying out a Thanksgiving feast!
In the conference room the next day, the Matchstick team pits Dawn and Jeff against each other, pointing up Dawn’s negative attitude and Jeff’s inability to take advice from anyone. Martha says she doesn’t like Jeff’s story before asking him to pick two people to bring back in with him. Jeff naturally chooses Dawn and Jim, and they each try to defend themselves but, in the end, Martha can’t get over how poorly the story connected to its target audience, the kids. She lets Jeff go. And what’s her catch phrase that we’ve been waiting all summer to hear? “You just don’t fit in.” I was like, huh? That’s it. True, “You’re fired” is totally ordinary sounding but Trump’s delivery is sharp and crisp. Martha has trouble even saying hers. Needless to say, you won’t be seeing too many people wearing “don’t fit in” T-shirts any time soon.

Martha writes a personal goodbye note to Jeff after ousting him. Did I miss something here? Did he bring her a show-warming gift or something? Why does he get a “thank you, but no thank you” note? Since when does a job interview end with a cordial handwritten letter? I must give Martha credit though; the letter is eloquently written. I guess her prison pen palling days really paid off.
