Business Rule #53:
Make Time for Downtime
January 21, 2007
Michelle’s team wasn’t looking to slack off. All they asked for was an hour and a half of sleep. Yet when Nicole D’Ambrosio finally retired to her cot, Michelle followed her into the tent, complaining that she was failing the team. Nicole gave it to her PM with both barrels, “There’s nothing for us to do. Tell me what you want me to do.” Michelle didn’t have a plan or an answer, except that she expected her team to be up all night trying to figure out something to do.
Aaron also expressed doubt when his team wanted to retire for the evening. “Should we be going to bed?” he asked. When his teammates assured him they should be though, he listened.
The next day, when Aaron’s group had to perform on the tour, they were able to adapt to the challenges that came up. James had tremendous energy but, unfortunately, didn’t have much to say. Stephani though was able to take over. She had done her homework about the Hollywood landmarks, and gave a smooth, professional presentation.

Michelle’s team looked lucky to be still standing. When Michelle’s commentary on the sites got repetitive, Tim took over for her. Unfortunately, he couldn’t be heard over the painfully loud feedback. If he had been more rested, he might have realized that all he needed to do was to move the microphone away from the speakers or might have somehow otherwise addressed the noise. His announcement that John Belushi died at the Chateau Marmont might have been fine, if only Tim had been alert enough to avoid going on to say that Belushi had overdosed by doing a speedball, right in front of families with small children.
There was no question that Aaron’s team won the challenge. Michelle’s group knew they blew it before they even heard the results of the customer surveys. Michelle short circuited the boardroom by quitting. Donald Trump tried to talk her out of it, for the sake of her character. But Michelle resigned anyway. Maybe she was just too tired to care.
