Business Rule #42:
Plan On the Unforeseeable
December 8, 2005
Ironically, Josh did seem to get the message of the autism charity loud and clear, saying that he was so sympathetic to the cause, he was willing to shovel gravel, if necessary. When the chairs needed to be set up, however, Josh took his grand old time getting down to the field to actually help out.
When Chris got the call that Joe Piscopo couldn’t perform because his union had a problem with it, Chris was understandably discouraged. Their celebrity host for the comedy showcase was its main attraction. What was baffling though was the way Chris dealt with it. Rather than considering working things out with the union, his first response was to ask Piscopo if he knew anyone else who could host. Very tacky. Joe had been a trooper up until then. Suggesting to the host that he was replaceable was rude and possibly destructive. Of course Joe didn’t suggest a replacement host—he wanted to donate his time to the pediatric AIDS charity and to be appreciated for his contribution.
Worse yet was when Chris told Rebecca after the call that “Joe Piscopo can’t do the show.” Not the full story. Surprisingly, Rebecca didn’t immediately call him on it, by inquiring why their star couldn’t host the show. Chris’s willingness to assume there was no way to work things out with the union, and Rebecca’s failure to get to the bottom of it could be the death of her bid to become the next Apprentice. Why not give the union a call and explore what it would take to get their approval?

Randal may be facing a more foreseeable problem—bad weather at an outdoor event. The Outback Steakhouse executive even joked about how good weather was Randal’s responsibility. What he was really saying was, “If there’s a possibility that it’s going to rain, we’ll need more than just that one tent behind home plate.” Failing to supply enough tents to shelter all of the attendees could be disastrous for Randal and his team.
For the exciting conclusion, stay tuned…
