Business Rule #30:
Let Your Work Speak for Itself
May 20, 2005
But Kendra freely admitted that the shape was Tana’s idea. Only when pressed did she add that there was much more to the winning GM brochure design than its shape.
Trump had a tough set of rules in this situation that were hard for Kendra to navigate. He was surprised to learn that she hadn’t designed the shape of the brochure, but he also questioned why she didn’t call out her teammates for going to sleep when she had to pull an all-nighter. Was Kendra grabbing credit that wasn’t hers or was she too modest for her own good?
“Why didn’t you tell GM that your team slept while you finished the project?” Because she’s going to have to work with these people again, that’s why. If she won, as Project Manager, she would naturally get the credit and there wouldn’t be anything more to gain by selling them out. I could guarantee you that she would have quickly changed her approach if her team had ended up in the boardroom.

On the other hand, Tana had to do damage control to correct real errors. Although she apologized to her group for her abrasive management style, you have to wonder how sincere she was. She said she was just trying to be funny, and her humor was misunderstood. As the old saying goes, “Many a true word is spoken in jest.” Tana may well have thought that she was just being witty, but, in truth, she was downright mean-spirited. Carolyn certainly didn’t buy it: “I don’t think that ‘a sense of humor’ is an excuse for the way you lead your team.” Chris Shelton said he was “a bit disappointed in her lack of loyalty and integrity with her team.” The Donald himself was ultimately swayed by the fact that he “didn’t like the way she treated her team.”
There is more to winning than having a brilliant idea and executing it well. There’s getting credit for the work you’ve done. In the season finale of The Apprentice, a sweet young woman with brains and ambition spoke more loudly through her performance and the respect she earned from her staff than she could have with words. And Donald Trump listened.
