Business Rule #29:
Learn Anywhere and Everywhere You Can
May 13, 2005
Since Tana didn’t trust her team to accept any of the responsibility for the coordination and execution of the schedule, she ended up as the sole “go to” person. What’s worse, if she was going try to do it all herself, she might have done better without the aggravation of dealing with her admittedly less-than-stellar staff. Last week, Tana threatened to fire members of her team if they didn’t do an adequate job. Instead, it seemed she only kept them on to be her scapegoats. If things went wrong, she would have her “three idiots” to blame.

Kendra’s most shining moment was pulling her assigned team together with such genuine espirit de corp. Having been a “team of one” in prior assignments, she seemed absolutely thrilled to work with a staff that wasn’t in direct competition with her. The heartfelt and tearful “goodbye” at Kendra’s limo was evidence that her team really cared about her and wanted her to win. The even greater proof of it was how smoothly the Best Buy Video Game World Championship came off. There were no visible hiccups come event day. Everyone had a good time, and the sponsors were more than pleased. That can only happen with detailed planning and a group effort. Kendra inspired the support of her team.
Book Smarts VERSUS Street Smarts? No, the sharpest managers have Book Smarts AND Street Smarts. Because whether you do your learning in college, the library, night school, the office, or the sales floor, you need all the education you can get to be successful in business.
